The Prophet Joseph Smith: Praise to the Man!

On this day on June 27, 1844, 181 years ago today, Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum Smith were martyred by a mob in Carthage, Illinois.

To commemorate the lives of Joseph and Hyrum, we held a special devotional today via Zoom with all of the missionaries in the Tennessee Knoxville Mission. We were very grateful to be joined by Brother Richard Turley. Brother Turley is the former managing director of the Church History Department and has been commissioned by the First Presidency to write a biography of the Prophet Joseph Smith. For many years, Brother Turley was our faithful home teacher where he visited our family each month, taught us, and cared for us. We love him.

This last week, we prepared to commemorate this day by studying a different talk about the Prophet Joseph Smith each day. Missionaries were invited to listen to these talks as they were driving throughout the day and discuss them. This preparation proved to be very powerful. Here are the talks we reviewed together as a mission:

Elder Lawrence E. Corbridge, “The Prophet Joseph Smith”, April 2014 General Conference
Elder Tad R. Callister, “Joseph Smith – Prophet of the Restoration”, October 2009 General Conference
Truman G. Madsen, “Lectures on Joseph Smith the Prophet”, BYU Education Week, 1978
Elder Macus B. Nash, “Joseph Smith: Strength Out of Weakness”, Ensign, December 2017
Elder Neil L. Andersen, “Joseph Smith”, October 2014 General Conference
President Dallin H. Oaks, “Joseph, the Man and Prophet”, April 1996 General Conference
President Russell M. Nelson, “The Prophet Joseph Smith”, 2022 Mission Leader Seminar
Elder M. Russell Ballard, “Joseph and Hyrum: Exemplary Missionary Companions”, 2023 Mission Leader Seminar

We were very fortunate to have Brother Turley share his thoughts about Joseph Smith. He’s spent his lifetime studying the prophet’s life. He taught us about Joseph as a young man, the events that led to the First Vision, the different accounts of the First Vision, Joseph’s experiences after Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him, and what his example means to missionaries.

After the devotional, we asked the missionaries to share with us the impressions they had felt. Here is what they shared:

  • Sister Avei: I loved that he talked about how the visions happened after he repented. He said that repentance didnt make him perfect but it made him worthy. He said repentance put him in the right mindset for those things to happen.
  • Elder Maxfield: It’s our responsibility as servants of the Lord to show our humility that comes from our spiritual strength! Joseph’s calmness came from his devotion to the truth, and that gave him the ultimate strength.
  • Sister Low: It was a reminder that we are fellow servants with the prophets, past and present. There is no greater call than to declare the truthfulness of the gospel of Christ, and how it can affect people’s lives. It was the call to Joseph Smith, the Prophet, and it is our call!!
  • Elder Poll: I liked how he told the first vision in a way that made me feel as if I was there. Very detailed, very personal.
  • Elder Farnes: I liked how he talked about how Joseph Smith’s spiritual capacity was much higher than we originally thought. Also like how he talked about how humble he was.
  • Elder Kwant: Brother Turley said a very interesting phrase, “We have severely underestimated the prophet Joseph Smith.” Everything he went through, he went through believing, no matter how hard things got for him and his family. How can we go forth in such a great cause? How can we be believing and testify no matter how hard times get? The same way he did, through faith in Jesus Christ. Let us not underestimate ourselves when we have faith in our Savior.
  • Elder Colling: I liked the way that he taught the Restoration in different perspectives/accounts that were very insightful and detailed about the character of the prophet Joseph Smith and also the person that he was and how God qualified him to do his work!
  • Elder Scott: Joseph’s sincere desire to change and find truth allowed him to be ready to receive revelation from God. While he wasn’t perfect, he had prepared himself. Our own preparation can help us receive answers and help from God, too.
  • Sister Ihrig: Joseph Smith could very easily have given way to pride and vanity, but he repeatedly chose to recognize and even publicize his faults. This was due to the fact that his greatest desire truly was to be forgiven and clean in the sight of God so that he may be worthy of salvation in His presence. He concecrated literally everything to the Savior and was blessed with even more humility and the forgiveness that he so desired.
  • Elder Wilkins: I loved that Joseph Smith had every opportunity to lead with pride, but he didn’t. Humility is clearly an attribute of a prophet.
  • Elder Collins: The Prophet Joseph Smith, although imperfect, was instrumental to bring forth the Restoration and open the dispensation of the fullness of times. His life truly was dedicated for a much greater work. His many sacrifices show us an example of a true disciple of Jesus Christ that magnified his calling and blessed his fellow man. The Book of Mormon is the keystone of our religion and the evidence of his divine calling. Through the infinite grace of God, Joseph Smith pushed forth the principles of Salvation into this dispensation. “Millions shall know Brother Joseph again!”
  • Sister Gabbitas: Spiritual experiences are often followed by spiritual draught and we can learn with joy or sorrow! I loved that, knowing that nothing is “wrong” with me, and in some ways I can choose to keep learning with joy by standing strong, and that is okay to learn in sorrow as well. God’s got it as we also turn to Him!
  • Sister Brizzee: When Joseph was seeking forgiveness for his sins, Satan worked even harder on him and maybe Joseph thought that something was wrong with him, but he then he felt the exquisite joy of forgiveness. Joseph was human as well.
  • Sister Brunner: Joseph Smith truly was preordained to be a prophet, seer and revelator and through him we have the fullness of the gospel. That is something I will be forever grateful for.
  • Elder Rodabough: Just before the first vision, Joseph Smith had to exert all the strength he had. When we exert all our strength in the work of the Lord, it really does take all of it, but then our eye is single, and then miracles come.
  • Sister Petersen: I love in the first vision God the Father and Jesus Christ first told Joseph that his sins were forgiven. It’s such a powerful line and sharing with him that as he waited patiently, he would play a big role in restoring the fullness of the gospel here on earth again. I love how much God trusted the Prophet Joseph Smith and how much trust Joseph Smith and his family had in God.
  • Elder Hales: It wasn’t explicitly mentioned, but as we were studying I learned that Joseph Smith had visitations from every prophet before him.
  • Elder Harper: We’ve only scratched the surface of the Prophet Joesph Smith.
  • Elder Eggleston: Joseph wasn’t a big reader, but rather he was a deep thinker and studied things out in his mind, I think this played a big factor in him receiving revelation and a big way we can recieve revalation as well
  • Elder Andrus: I love how Brothet Turelys favorite characteristic of Joseph Smith was humility. I believe the reason why save Jesus Christ Jospeh has done more for the welfare of mankind is because he was asked to do more save Jesus Christ. He was able to do all that he was asked because he was humble enough to submit to the will of the Lord. Pretty neat if you ask me.
  • Elder Harmon: What stands out to me is the power of study. As we seek divine help with our studys we will be edified thru the holy ghost. Joseph Smith was such a great example of this he changed his life thru the knowledge he gained because he had a true desire to fill his heart.
  • Sister Larson: The reason that Joseph Smith and his history and work for the Lord touches the soul is because he was living through experiences that relate to the most common human experience: Seeking to know truth. He was so keenly relatable because he wasn’t perfect and grew to know his Savior through learning and seeking to do the will of the Lord, which is no easy thing for anyone. His humility allowed him to have confidence in standing up for what he knew to be true, even when he was hated and persecuted for it. He stands with great prophets of old like Moses, Noah, and Abinadi. I marvel that even Christ himself was rejected, Joseph had the opportunity like many before him to know what it means to give your life for the sake of the truth, and bebwilling to do it. Seek truth, the Spirit testifys of truth, defend truth, the pattern of prophets throughout the ages.
  • Elder Brown: I love how Brother Turley pointed that that Joseph Smith was attacked like never before by the most evil spirit ever known and immediately after had to worry about getting burned but the pure brightness of the Lord but still Joseph explained “my soul was filled with love and for many days I could rejoice with great Joy and the Lord was with me” in his 1932 account.
  • Elder Kerby: I absolutely love how humble the Prophet Joseph Smith was. Despite the life and history altering experiences he had, he never sought attention or praise, but rather quickly directed the glory to Jesus Christ, as this is His Church restored on the earth today. Under the umbrella of humility bloomed other spectacular characteristics in the Prophet Joseph, namely longsuffering, meekness, integrity, and perseverance. He knew who he put his trust and faith in, the Lord Jesus Christ. It takes humility to do so, rather than buckling under the pressures and accusations of the world.
  • Elder Clawson: I like that Brother Turley continually mentioned the need for a spiritual witness of Joseph Smith’s calling as a prophet. Especially coming from someone who has so much knowledge and experience with history. There is no greater witness than one from God.
  • Elder Newman: I loved learning that when Joseph Smith had the vision he went to a trusted mentor to talk with. But that mentor ended up ridiculing and persecuting him for what Joseph saw and told him. Imagine telling the person you trust the most this miraculous event and then they start calling you a liar and start persecuting you and started telling others about this vision and spreading rumors that this vision was of the devil. That hurts and that’s gotta be hard. But Joseph Smith knew what he saw, and he knew that God had his back and he stayed humble and strong in what he knew to be true and God magnified that.
  • Sister Williams: I loved the emphasis on personal spiritual experiences. The first vision was a very personal answer to a humble boy’s prayer for forgiveness. As we humble ourselves before God, we can also be filled with his Spirit and sanctified. We can have personal spiritual experiences.
  • Sister Pulver: I liked that Brother Turley talked about a pattern. He talked about prophets throughout time having a big spiritual experience, but then having periods of opposition and exhaustion afterward.
  • Elder Martin: Im always grateful of the fact that like us all, Joseph also sinned a lot and had to learn from mistakes and seek out forgiveness over and over again. Just like him, we make mistakes, but we can learn, turn to Christ, and repent!
  • Elder Avery: That, if anything, history has greatly underestimated the Prophet Joseph Smith.
  • Sister Fraser: Spiritual experiences are tiring but worth it, and if we live worthily, those experiences will be magnified by the spirit.
  • Elder Barnett: Humility is one of the most important attributes to being a disciple of Jesus Christ.
  • Elder Phillips: “We are drastically underestimating the Prophet Joseph Smith.” – Brother Turley
  • Sister Avery: That Joseph saw himself as less than ordinary, but the reality is that he was “spectacular” beyond anything that we can measure.
  • Sister Heslop: With the information Bro. Turley shared, it makes Joseph Smith a very real person. We loved learning about his youth and all the hard things he faced. He truly was a man of humility and integrity.
  • Elder Jack: It takes a long time to write a book. But not for the Prophet Joseph Smith!
  • Sister Campbell: It must have been such a relief for Joseph Smith to learn about the Book of Mormon so that we don’t have to just take his word for it, but that any of us can come to receive a witness that Jesus Christ has restored his church to the earth again and called a prophet again. The heavens are open!
  • Sister Nielsen: Never waiver in your testimony of God and Jesus Christ even when there’s opposition.
  • Sister Brown: The First Vision wasn’t just an event, it was a milestone that opened the windows of Heaven and therefore opened the last dispensation. “The promised restoration goes forward through continuing revelation.” “It will never be taken from the earth again.”
  • Elder Robbins: Truth is a knowledge of what is, what was, and what is to come.
  • Sister Covington: It was Joseph’s humility that allowed him to be an instrument in God’s hands. He was so willing to do whatever was asked of him, and didn’t allow pride to get in the way!
  • Sister Arnold: Opposition against truth stems from pride. Believing in God & staying true to our testimony in Him and His servants comes from humility.
  • Elder Ransom: Though he was a Holy Prophet, he was also a man. Yet he did not let his flaws and shortcomings impose upon his character or stop the work of God. There is a reason that in this dispensation, God called a boy and a teenager to open it. That we can know that we are all of worth to Him. And that He will mold us if we let Him.
  • Elder Wyeth: I loved how Brother Turley identified humility as one of Joseph’s chief characteristics. One only fitting of the chief prophet of the dispensation, and it’s been interesting to think how things may have played out differently had he not had his eye so single to the glory of God and the reestablishment of His kingdom. What a wonderful role model to conduct ourselves after! When I grow up I want to be like Joseph.
  • Sister Christenson: No unhallowed hand can stop so great a cause.
  • Elder Gardner: We prepare our hearts and minds for revelation by being willing and worthy. There must be a spiritual balance equal to our research of scripture.
  • Sister Hansen: Learning with joy/learning with sorrow. Both can be great spiritual experiences and powerful for our growth.
  • Elder McDonald: That in order to grow a greater faith in Jesus Christ, I need to better study and understand his mouth piece, Joseph Smith and grow a testimony of him and his works.
  • Elder Clayton: Our Heavenly Father truly loves us more than we can comprehend. He is merciful to all that seek him earnestly, such as what we learned about Joseph Smith. When we prepare our hearts, we invite revelation into our lives.
  • Elder Grant: There is so much more to the Prophet Joseph Smith than I knew before. The heavenly messengers that came, the support and power God gave to Joseph, and the humility that Joseph had to continue to do the will of the Father even through some very challenging times.
  • Elder Harley: Joseph Smith was much more than we ever perceived him to be.
  • Sister Bowler: Waiting is all part of the plan. Those waiting periods stretch and grow us more than we can understand.
  • Elder Caldwell: For the salvation of our souls other than God and his son Jesus Christ, no man on earth has done more than Joseph Smith restoring his church bringing us forth truth and the knowledge as to how we should live this life to follow HIM!
  • Elder Morgan: That even though we know Jesus Christ is the Savior, that He loves us dearly, and His purpose is to being to pass our immortality and eternal life, we make mistakes. We at times will feel unworthy or untrusted. The beauty of the Atonment of Jesus Christ is that when we choose to change, it immediately takes place in our lives. It is all centered around our agency.

Think how prophetic W. W. Phelps was when he wrote the line, “Millions shall know Brother Joseph again!” One of the blessings of being a missionary is we have the great opportunity to teach people about the Prophet Joseph Smith. As Preach My Gospel teaches us, we should refer quickly to the Prophet Joseph Smith and the Restoration. This is our unique message to the world.

Tender Mercies in the TKM: Vincent

Vincent was first introduced to the gospel while in jail. One of his cellmates was friends with Miss Gloria, a member in the Hardin Valley Ward. Through the cellmate, Miss Gloria and Vincent were able to create a great friendship, and Miss Gloria was able to help out Vincent a lot while he was in jail. It was here where Gloria introduced Vincent to the restored gospel, and afterwards sent his information to the missionaries so that they could get him a copy of the Book of Mormon.

After receiving the referral from the Hardin Valley Sisters, Elder Graham and Elder Griffith were able to drop off a copy of the Book of Mormon. They set up a time to come back and talk about his experience reading. Over the next few weeks they kept stopping by and reading the Book of Mormon with him to help him understand the Book of Mormon better.

While the missionaries were reading with Vincent, they got to 2 Nephi 31, which brought up the topic of baptism. Vincent expressed that he had never been baptized and that he had a desire to be baptized. So they invited him to be baptized . As Elder Miller entered the area, him and Elder Griffith were able to really help him prepare for baptism.

As the missionaries met with Vincent, he always described that he felt good, he began to truly see the blessings of the gospel in his life. The joy and peace that entered his life was evident. His desire to be baptized came from his desire to be on the right path with God. The missionaries explained this is the covenant path. Vincent had to overcome some struggles with the Word of Wisdom, but with the support of the missionaries and members of the Rockwood Ward, he was successful. As he came to church he was truly able to become a part of the Rockwood family, and was very excited to become an official part of that ward family when he was baptized.

.

Vincent was baptized on February 22, 2025. He has since been able to attend the temple and is sharing the gospel in normal and natural ways with everyone he can.

Tender Mercies in the TKM: James

James saw some information on Instagram about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and made a request to meet with the missionaries. That’s when he was first taught by Elder Andreasen and Elder Cox. James shared he wanted to surround himself with the right kind of people and had this strong feeling he should start going to church again.

Preach My Gospel teaches us, “Heavenly Father may have blessed the people you find with valuable spiritual preparation. The steps they have already taken may have prepared them to make covenants with God through baptism in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” This was definitely the case with James. Heavenly Father had been giving him important spiritual impressions that had prepared his heart to “receive the word” (Alma 16:16-17).

16 And there was no inequality among them; the Lord did pour out his Spirit on all the face of the land to prepare the minds of the children of men, or to prepare their hearts to receive the word which should be taught among them at the time of his coming—

17 That they might not be hardened against the word, that they might not be unbelieving, and go on to destruction, but that they might receive the word with joy, and as a branch be grafted into the true vine, that they might enter into the rest of the Lord their God.

Alma 16:16-17

James loved the principles he was taught by Elder Cox and Elder Andreasen. While he was being taught, Elder Johnson was transferred into the Gray Ward. James came to church and felt the love that the members of the Gray Ward had for him. Soon he was invited to be baptized, which he accepted and continued to work towards this goal..

James watching General Conference with the missionaries.

James continued to progress and even watched a session of General Conference with the missionaries. While he knew that baptism was the right thing to do, he wanted to be sure it was a choice he was making for himself. He didn’t want to blindly follow and he wanted to know for himself that the things he was being taught were true. He prayed about it and felt good about it, especially the Book of Mormon, and knew this was the right thing for him to do.

.

James was then baptized October 12, 2024 and confirmed the next day in Sacrament meeting. James has been able to see the joys of the gospel enter his life as he continues to study and come to church and feel the blessings and power that come from making sacred covenants with God.

Tender Mercies in the TKM: Michel

Michel was born in Nicaragua and grew up constantly facing dangerous situations. One night, two men kidnapped and tried to kill her. She said a prayer and miraculously was able to fend off her attackers and escape. She immediately learned trust in God and to do everything He asked. She learned He would deliver her and not lead her astray. She knew she could trust Him and made the hardest decision of her life, deciding to leave everything behind and move to the United States for a safer future for her and her family.

Elder Barrow and Elder Johns first knocked on Michel’s door in December of 2023, but unfortunately they weren’t able to contact her after their first visit. Shortly after meeting the missionaries, Michel moved to Dallas, Texas. The missionaries in Dallas met Michel on a bus. She loved their message and later attended one of their services. The missionaries continued teaching her until she decided to move back to Knoxville, Tennessee.

Elder Rodriguez and Elder Colling then got a phone call from the Dallas, Texas missionaries about Michel and were able to meet with her immediately. Michel was very grateful to see the missionaries and progressed quickly.

In the very first lesson Michel accepted the invitation to be baptized. During this lesson they talked about how we can become closer to God, and prepare ourselves for baptism. She readily agreed and started finding joy in daily prayer and studying in the Book Of Mormon. She knew she was being led down the right path.

An important moment in Michel’s conversion is when she made the decision to come to church. Sunday service was very special for her and her kids. They learned so much about Jesus Christ and her daughter loved Primary.

We also could not have done this without the Gilday family who has supported Michel in so many ways! The Gildays have helped her understand the true concept of charity! They have also been a friend to Michel in some of her hardest times and done so much for Michel.

Michel was baptized on January 4, 2025 as a member of the West Hills Ward. One of the most powerful moments at Michel’s baptism is when she bore her testimony about her love of Jesus Christ. You could feel the spirit that entered the room when she bore testimony about the Savior. You could tell that she knew what it meant to come unto Christ! We are so grateful for this decision that Michel has made to be baptized and know she will be a great disciple of Christ.

Tender Mercies in the TKM: Elie

We first met Elie when she came to church with her brother Jared. As soon as we met her, we immediately knew that we would be great friends. She had moved to the University of Tennessee for school and her brother decided to invite her to come to church with him. Since that day, she never stopped coming!

Elie was raised learning the doctrine of Jesus Christ and of the Book of Mormon from her parents, but was never baptized. When she attended church for the first time in a long time, it all rang true.

.

Her first lesson, she joined her brother, Elder O’Brien, and Elder Hathaway for a lesson with their friend. She recognized the Spirit strongly in that lesson and started to remember the teachings of her father about the Book of Mormon and the Plan of Salvation. We started to meet with her and go over God’s plan, the restoration and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Everything made sense to Elie and she knew it was true.

.

The turning point for Elie was when she attended the baptism of Cece, the same friend she participated in the lesson with at the very beginning. After the baptism, we all gathered to talk about it. We asked about if she wanted to get baptized and she said, “How about the 13th of October?” We made all the arrangements and Elie was baptized on October 13, 2024.

We were able to attend the temple with her, and as soon as we exited she said, “I want to go back!” Elie now is serving as a ward missionary and sharing her testimony with so many others. Her influence has stretched to everyone in the YSA and all those around her.

Tender Mercies in the TKM: Simon

In 2013, missionaries found Simon pushing buggies, TVs, and other heavy items. The sisters offered to help, and introduced The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Simon for the first time. Simon was at first nervous, but was more open as they talked. The missionaries kept visiting Simon at Walmart until one time they just stop coming.

Fast forward to near the end of September 2023, Simon made the decision to come to church after a member had invited him for nearly two months. That’s when Simon met with missionaries again.

As Simon walked into church each week, he felt a sense of peace. Simon noticed how things started to work out better within his life as he was going to church as when he wasn’t. He really desired to come closer to Jesus Christ and live his life according to God’s will.

Due to his busy work schedule, the Elders would meet at the shop Simon worked at to teach principles of the Plan of Salvation, and the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Elder Wakefield and Elder Safsten even helped him move a transmission out of a car!

Many of the missionaries invited Simon to be baptized, but he was just not sure about it. Simon had a lot of questions in regards to the Church of Jesus Christ that he had trouble finding answers to. Many of the members in the Franklin branch shared their love for Simon and helped him feel comfortable at church. One of those members was Brother Sam Carter, who spent a lot of his time answering Simon’s questions. One of those questions was about the temple. He had heard a lot of things about the temple and how special it was, but he couldn’t just take the word of others to know.

One day at church, as Elder Collins and Elder Wakefield were greeting people at church, Brother Carter walked in and said that Simon has set a date to be baptized! The Elders were eager to know what made Simon make the decision. They talked with Simon and he shared what happened the day before.

Simon’s desire to go to the temple, to see for himself, to feel the special Spirit at the temple, and ultimately follow the example of Jesus Christ helped him make his first covenant with his Father in Heaven. Brother Carter and a few other members traveled to Atlanta to see the temple, answering Simon’s questions about the temple along the way. Although Simon wasn’t able to go inside, he shared how he noticed how happy everyone was entering and leaving the temple. Simon stated how he was able to feel uninterrupted peace for an hour, a type of peace he hasn’t truly felt in years. That peace was the Holy Ghost bringing comfort to Simon. He shared how he now knew that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Christ’s true church restored.

Elder Collins and Elder Colunga consistently met with Simon, as well as Brother Carter, to answer the rest of Simon’s questions. After learning more about the Book of Mormon, Simon shared that he perfectly understood how the Holy Bible and the Book of Mormon work together to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Simon was baptized and confirmed on September 15th, 2024.

.

There has always been a special spirit about him. The Elders noticed how that spirit amplified after this special day.

A few days after making a covenant and receiving the Holy Ghost, Simon expressed how he was unable to sleep for nearly three long months, but since his baptism, he was able to sleep in peace. He continues to bring joy in the lives of others with his willingness to share the Book of Mormon with everyone. Simon is an example of a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Tender Mercies in the TKM: Stuart

I can clearly remember the day that Stuart walked into the church building shortly after Sacrament meeting had ended. He told us that he saw on Facebook that it said “Visitors are Welcome,” and it was inviting people to come to church. So, he decided to come!

Stuart had never read the Bible before and didn’t know that much about Jesus Christ, but he knew he wanted to strengthen his relationship with Him. Sister Holladay and I set up an appointment to meet him at Dairy Queen for our first lesson. When we had arrived at Dairy Queen, we talked to him about God, our Heavenly Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. We explained how they are three separate individuals and how they work towards one purpose.

.

We then talked about how prophets in the scriptures prophecy of Jesus Christ coming and how prophets speak for God. Stuart then learned that Jesus Christ came to the earth and gained a physical body and atoned for his sins and did this so that He could support Stuart. Stuart also didn’t know how to pray to God, and so we gave him a simple outline. Stuart learned that when he is going through something hard, he can always turn to God in prayer and the Lord will help him.

About three lessons in with Stuart, Sister Holladay and I decided to extend the baptismal invitation, and Stuart was so excited to follow the example of Jesus Christ and be baptized. About three days after his baptism, we set up time to go to the Raleigh North Carolina Temple. Stuart told us that the temple felt familiar to him and that he wanted to do everything the temple had to offer. Being able to teach Stuart was an absolute privilege. I truly cannot express in words how humbled and grateful I feel to have been the messenger of the covenant and to share these restored truths with such a beautiful, humbled, prepared son of God. Stuart has so many beautiful things in store for him, and I feel just a fraction of the love that God has for him.

– Sister Wall

.

What a blessing it’s been to teach Stuart about Jesus Christ! There were so many miracles along the way like him randomly showing up to church his first day, minimal damage when he hit a deer on his way to church, and his own quickly-developed testimony of the Savior Jesus Christ and the restored gospel.

Several days after he was baptized and had been to the temple, he came to us and the Garcia family and told us of the immense family opposition he’s been having as a new member. It really broke our hearts knowing how much his family meant to him, but he testified with conviction “I cannot deny how I feel, I know it’s true.”

Our experience with Stuart has truly opened my eyes to the power that the Spirit can have on an individual. I know Stuart is going to continue strong and receive all the blessings the Lord has in store for him!

– Sister Holladay

Studying General Conference

Message in the October 25, 2024 Newsletter

In his BYU Devotional titled “Hold Fast to the Words of the Prophets”, Elder Neil L. Andersen asked the following questions:

  1. Could you tell me the names of the three members of the First Presidency and the names of each of those who comprise the Quorum of the Twelve?
  2. Do you sustain the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as prophets, seers, and revelators?
  3. Could you share with me the counsel given by the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from last October’s general conference?
  4. Perhaps more important, could you share with me a recent decision where you changed something in your life because of counsel received from one of these 15 men?

We had a wonderful General Conference earlier this month. We invite you to study the talks given, especially by those who we sustain as prophets, seers, and revelators.

As you study their talks, you will find that prophets and apostles are Preach My Gospel Master Inviters! You will see that they follow the pattern we are asked to follow in Chapter 11 of PMG:

Teach Doctrine > Invite with Clear Language > Promise Blessings > Testify

For many years, I’ve used this template as I study talks from General Conference, and invite you to try it out. As you study these talks, identify and write down the following:

  1. What did the prophets say that you want to remember?
  2. What did they invite you to do?
  3. What blessings did they promise?

We promise that as you record their invitations and promised blessings, you will feel a strong desire to act on their invitations and claim every promised blessing made by prophets.

Use this same pattern as you teach your friends to help them make and keep commitments (as you know, you can learn more about it in PMG: Chapter 11):

Teach Doctrine > Invite with Clear Language > Promise Blessings > Testify > Follow Up

We love you! Let us know if you need anything.

President and Sister Barlow
