Last year, while watching the Farragut 4th of July Parade as a family, we had a spontaneous idea: Next year, let’s enter the missionaries into the parade!
So this year, we did just that.
As we prepared, we asked ourselves, What could we hand out that people would actually appreciate—and that would support our missionary purpose? The answer: custom Tabernacle Choir invitation cards. Each card included a QR code linking to a playlist of uplifting music from the Tabernacle Choir, a virtual tour of a church building, a tool to find a local congregation, and an option to meet with the missionaries.

.
We decorated a truck in red, white, a blue, and printed 5,000 cards to hand out at the parade. Each one had to be labeled with the local meetinghouse address and a missionary contact number. The Knoxville Zone met early at the start of the parade to help label all the cards with this personalized information.

.
The missionaries were amazing! They offered cards to everyone they passed, stayed cheerful and enthusiastic throughout the parade, and had a lot of fun.

.
By the end of the ~2-mile route, we had distributed nearly 4,000 cards. It was a fantastic day—full of purpose, fun, and patriotism for our country. Here’s hoping the seeds planted lead to some phone calls…and even more importantly, to lives touched by the gospel. It definitely was a memorable July 4th for the missionaries!

On May 28, 2025, we welcomed 9 new missionaries to the Tennessee Knoxville Mission. They have made great sacrifices to be here and will serve in Tennessee for the next 18 or 24 months.

.
As always, we had a great welcoming party at the airport, complete with the welcome posters made by the departing missionaries the prior day.

.
In our first meeting with the missionaries, we review our missionary purpose and the Doctrine of Christ taught in the Book of Mormon. After taking our pictures, they then departed for downtown Knoxville and the University of Tennessee campus to find people to teach.
Our favorite part of the day is to introduce these new missionaries to their trainers. The direction given to us as mission leaders is that only the best missionaries should serve as trainers. They play a huge role in helping these new missionaries get started in the right way and to help them through any initial challenges they face in adjusting to missionary life.
| New Missionary | Trainer | Area |
| Sister Bowler | Sister Hughes | Marion |
| Sister Hartman | Sister Jonsson | Waynesville |
| Sister Nielsen | Sister Campbell | Ooltewah/Collegedale |
| Sister Erickson | Sister Rose | Cleveland |
| Sister Amundson | Sister Lingard | Abingdon |
| Elder Parker | Elder Harmon | Hardin Valley |
| Elder Law | Elder Brown | Dalton 2 |
| Elder Valdovinos | Elder Fisher | Grove Park SP |
| Elder Fritze | Elder Youngberg | Asheville SP |

.
We are also thrilled to have Sister Kerry Gray join us. Sister Gray will be serving in the mission office. We’ve know Kerry for many years and feel very lucky to have her with us here in the Tennessee Knoxville Mission.

.
This is going to be another outstanding group of missionaries. We are very grateful they’ve each made the decision to serve a mission and help others come unto Christ.

On Wednesday, May 28, 2025, 11 wonderful missionaries completed their service in the Tennessee Knoxville Mission. This group of elders arrived just a few weeks before we did in 2023. We’ve had the great blessing of working with these sisters their entire mission. So we’ve seen how these missionaries have come unto Christ as they have been inviting all to come unto Christ.

.
We celebrated these missionaries on the Tuesday before their departure. We first met and reviewed some of the most important things they can do that will help them be lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ:
We then met individually with each missionary and gave them a blessing. This is always a special moment for us as their mission leaders.
We then went back to the mission home and competed in the 17th TKM Family Olympics. Because of rain, we had to make some adjustments, so our events with this group were corn hole, ping pong, and of course, making welcome posters for the new missionaries arriving the next day.

.
The marquee event is our poster making contest, and it again was very competitive.

.
As always, we crowned champions of the 17th TKM Family Olympics.

.
We love these missionaries! They’ve changed and they’ve led changes that have happened in the mission as they’ve served. Great things lie ahead for each of them!

On this day on June 27, 1844, 181 years ago today, Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum Smith were martyred by a mob in Carthage, Illinois.
To commemorate the lives of Joseph and Hyrum, we held a special devotional today via Zoom with all of the missionaries in the Tennessee Knoxville Mission. We were very grateful to be joined by Brother Richard Turley. Brother Turley is the former managing director of the Church History Department and has been commissioned by the First Presidency to write a biography of the Prophet Joseph Smith. For many years, Brother Turley was our faithful home teacher where he visited our family each month, taught us, and cared for us. We love him.
This last week, we prepared to commemorate this day by studying a different talk about the Prophet Joseph Smith each day. Missionaries were invited to listen to these talks as they were driving throughout the day and discuss them. This preparation proved to be very powerful. Here are the talks we reviewed together as a mission:
Elder Lawrence E. Corbridge, “The Prophet Joseph Smith”, April 2014 General Conference
Elder Tad R. Callister, “Joseph Smith – Prophet of the Restoration”, October 2009 General Conference
Truman G. Madsen, “Lectures on Joseph Smith the Prophet”, BYU Education Week, 1978
Elder Macus B. Nash, “Joseph Smith: Strength Out of Weakness”, Ensign, December 2017
Elder Neil L. Andersen, “Joseph Smith”, October 2014 General Conference
President Dallin H. Oaks, “Joseph, the Man and Prophet”, April 1996 General Conference
President Russell M. Nelson, “The Prophet Joseph Smith”, 2022 Mission Leader Seminar
Elder M. Russell Ballard, “Joseph and Hyrum: Exemplary Missionary Companions”, 2023 Mission Leader Seminar
We were very fortunate to have Brother Turley share his thoughts about Joseph Smith. He’s spent his lifetime studying the prophet’s life. He taught us about Joseph as a young man, the events that led to the First Vision, the different accounts of the First Vision, Joseph’s experiences after Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him, and what his example means to missionaries.

After the devotional, we asked the missionaries to share with us the impressions they had felt. Here is what they shared:

Think how prophetic W. W. Phelps was when he wrote the line, “Millions shall know Brother Joseph again!” One of the blessings of being a missionary is we have the great opportunity to teach people about the Prophet Joseph Smith. As Preach My Gospel teaches us, we should refer quickly to the Prophet Joseph Smith and the Restoration. This is our unique message to the world.

Sara had been living in Tennessee for a few years with a few of her children, but she felt alone and empty. She was looking for something to fill her life. She didn’t feel satisfied from work or from anything else in her life. Sara grew up going to church, but eventually walked away from it for several reasons. She continued in faith, and saw the hand of God in her life as she faced trials. She grew in determination and faith as she was refined by everything she faced. One day, she saw an invite on Facebook to meet with the missionaries. Sara decided to put in a request to have the missionaries visit her. Just a few minutes after putting in the request, she received a call from Sister Christenson and Sister Lewis.
In the first contact with Sara, the sisters taught her about the sacrament from 3 Nephi 20. A phrase that stood out to Sara was when Jesus says, “He that drinketh of this wine drinketh of my blood to his soul; and his soul shall never hunger nor thirst, but shall be filled” (3 Nephi 20:8). She wanted to be filled, and that’s what she told the missionaries. They decided to meet in the church two days later, on a Saturday, for a church tour. At that church tour, Sara felt the Spirit and the love of God and accepted the invitation to come to church the next day.
Unfortunately, a family emergency came up and she was unable to come. The missionaries also tried to set up a return appointment during that week, but were unsuccessful until Saturday, when Sara finally answered and confirmed that she would be at church the next day.
Sara came and loved her church experience! The members of the Lakeway Ward were so kind to her. After church, the missionaries along with Sara and Sister Puentes sat in front of the font and talked about baptism. Sara was excited and said she wanted to get baptized. She started sharing stories from her life with them and expressed how blessed she felt from being at church. While at the font, the missionaries didn’t invite her to be baptized. As soon as Sara left, they felt like they should have, so they went to Sara’s house later that evening and invited her to be baptized two weeks from that day. She started crying and happily agreed to the date, especially because she would be leaving for Pennsylvania not too long after that.
It took a lot of planning and focus, but with the help of God and Sara’s faith she was able to learn quickly. She was talking with her oldest son and learned that he had been taught by missionaries and baptized into the Church. When the missionaries taught about temples, she was so excited that she asked if they could go the next day! They had to say that they couldn’t go the next day but they did set a date to be able to go after she was baptized. She had more light and peace with her as she studied and prayed. Sara expressed more than once her love and gratitude to God for bringing the missionaries into her life. As she prepared for her baptism, Sara grew in understanding and felt the mercy of God as well as the miracle of repentance and the blessing of forgiveness. She felt burdens lifted off her shoulders that she had carried for years.
The day of her baptism came and she was so excited to finally be able to start a new life and to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. She asked for the same missionaries who had previously given her a blessing to help with her baptism. She asked for Elder Pack to perform the baptism and Elder Weaver to perform the confirmation. Sara was baptized on May 18, 2025.

After her baptism, she bore a sweet testimony of the love of God and her gratitude for the gospel. Just three days later she was able to go to the Columbia, South Carolina temple and be baptized for her mother. Elder Puentes, one of the senior missionaries serving in Lakeway, was able to be baptized for her father. It was a special day and she loved the peace and joy that came from going to the temple.
Just a few weeks later, Sara moved to Pennsylvania. She has had a challenging life, but is full of faith and has learned to rely on God. She continues to face trials but does so now with the gift of the Holy Ghost and a firm commitment to follow Him the rest of her life. She continues to grow in determination and her love for God and the scriptures. Sara truly is a disciple of Jesus Christ and an example of His love.
