The Power of the Temple

The week of July 8th will be a very memorable week of our mission. Back in February, Sister Barlow invited all of the missionaries to read the Book of Mormon in 65 days, which concluded on June 18th. We gathered that night as an entire mission and read the final chapter of the Book of Mormon together. It was a very powerful experience.

There was a lot of build up as Sister Barlow had been telling the mission she had something special planned to celebrate finishing the Book of Mormon in 65 days. That night, after finishing the final chapter, she announced that the entire mission would attend the temple together in July. After attending the temple in the morning, we would have a brief zone conference in the afternoon before returning home.

Missionaries react to temple announcement.

On Tuesday, July 9th, the Asheville and Kingsport Zones would go to the Columbia South Carolina Temple. On Wednesday, July 10th, the Cumberland, Chattanooga, and Cleveland Zones would go to the Atlanta Georgia Temple. And on Thursday, July 11th, the Knoxville and Cookeville Zones would go to the Nashville Tennessee Temple.

For every zone conference, we do a “Prepare to Learn”. This Prepare to Learn was focused on the temple:

Elder Hillman has been working the last couple of months to get everything organized for our temple trips. Because of the size of these temples, they don’t have clothing available for the missionaries, so missionaries had to borrow temple clothing from members. We are very grateful for all of the members to help out. Elder Hillman tracked every missionary to ensure they had what they needed. He also arranged for the bus transportation to each temple and helped organize the missionaries to get to the bus departure locations. Office couples assisted him in arranging for the lunches we would have after the temple experience. It was an incredible amount of work. Elder Hillman was definitely the MVP of the week!

On the bus rides to the temple, we wanted to use this as a time to prepare to have a special experience in the temple. To help facilitate that, we created a “Temple Companion Study”. Companions sat together on the buses and went through this study guide together, discussing their feelings and impressions, and writing down thoughts in their journal.

Everyone at the temple was so kind. The workers were so thoughtful and put a lot of effort into making sure the missionaries had a special experience. We are very grateful for them.

Many of our missionaries had not done endowments in over a year. So they were excited, and their anticipation helped create a really meaningful experience. It was powerful for them individually, and it was powerful for us collectively as a mission.

President Nelson is a Preach My Gospel Master Inviter! When he invites us to act, he always promises blessings. He has promised that making covenants and attending the temple will:

  • Open the door to every spiritual blessing and privilege available to men, women, and children everywhere.
  • Bring increased personal revelation and peace and will fortify your commitment to stay on the covenant path.
  • Open the windows of heaven and bring increased revelation.
  • Allow the Lord to teach you how to draw upon His priesthood power.
  • Bring the miracles He knows you need.
  • Improve your ability to hear Him.
  • Bring increased security.
  • Strengthen your faith and spiritual fortitude.
  • Increase our understanding of Jesus Christ and His Atonement.
  • Endow us with His healing, strengthening power.
  • Counter the lure of the world.
  • Strengthen your spiritual foundation.
  • Bring blessings for eternity.
  • Increase positive spiritual momentum.
  • Bless your life in ways nothing else can.
  • Help us in our quest to be a peacemaker.
  • Build faith.
  • Help you think celestial!
  • Be the place where He manifests Himself to us.
  • Empower you to meet the challenges of life.
  • Receive answers to prayer, personal revelation, greater faith, strength, comfort, increased knowledge, and increased power.
  • Help you to catch the vision of who you really are, who you can become, and the kind of life you can have forever.
  • Enhance the way you see yourself and how you fit into God’s magnificent plan.
  • Have the power of God and that angels really will help you.
  • Help you hold fast to the iron rod.
  • Protect you from the world’s mists of darkness.
  • Bolster your testimony of Jesus Christ and His Atonement.
  • Soothe your spirit in times of pain.
  • Open the heavens.
  • Help you receive all the blessings promised to Abraham.

These are the blessings we want every missionary (and returned missionary) from the Tennessee Knoxville Mission to receive!

After attending the temple, we held a shortened zone conference to talk about the blessings of the temple.

In his General Conference talk “Rejoice in the Gift of Priesthood Keys”, President Nelson invited us to study D&C 109 and note the blessings promised there. They include:

  • Place to feel the Lord’s power
  • Feel constrained to acknowledge that God has sanctified it. (constrained = compel or force someone toward a particular course of action.)
  • Taught words of wisdom
  • They may grow up in the Lord
  • Receive a fulness of the Holy Ghost
  • Be organized according to God’s laws
  • Be prepared to receive every needful thing from the Lord
  • When I transgress, I will want to speedily repent
  • Be armed with power
  • Leave the temple empowered to share the gospel
  • Honorably hold a name and a standing before the Lord

One of the most important blessings for our missionaries is found in D&C 109:22-23.

It is from the temple that His servants…these wonderful Elders and Sisters…go forth armed with His power. And with that power from the temple, they then “bear exceedingly great and glorious tidings, in truth, unto the ends the earth, that they may know that this is [His] work.” Our hope is that every missionary in the TKM renewed that power this week.

Elder Robison caught COVID in the MTC, so he joined everyone a day later where we took a picture with him at the airport with his new companion Elder Andreasen, and his zone leaders Elder Hurtado and Elder Porter.

Our departing missionaries made posters welcoming these missionaries to the TKM!

We tried something different with this group. Typically we start Day 1 with an orientation to things like finances, apartments, vehicles, medical care, etc., but have felt we need to begin Day 1 with greater spiritual power. After a discussion on our missionary purpose and focusing on Jesus Christ, Sister Barlow handed out a swag bag with items like a new Book of Mormon to read in the next three months highlighting every reference to the Savior, a copy of the daily schedule for the TKM, a card to memorize 3 Nephi 5:13, and the flash cards to memorize The Living Christ.

After taking pictures, we took the missionaries to a park that overlooks Knoxville where we did interviews and the Assistants and Sister Training Leaders facilitated training on obtaining power through the Book of Mormon and through increasing our willingness. We usually then go contact people on the University of Tennessee Campus, but with school out for the summer, we went to Market Square and Gay Street and these missionaries did their first contacting.

We then came back to the stake center where we assigned these new missionaries to their trainers, and then they were off to their first areas.

We are very excited about this great group of missionaries and look forward to all of the experience we will get to share together during their service.

9th TKM Family Olympics

On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, we said goodbye to 9 remarkable missionaries who have completed their service in the Tennessee Knoxville Mission. Our day began with lunch as we discussed important commitments they must keep to be lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ. We had the chance to give each of them a blessing. We then went to the mission home for the 9th TKM Olympics, dinner, and a testimony meeting.

.

We held four competitions for the 9th TKM Family Olympics. The premier event was the poster making contest, along with corn hole, bocce, and Kub. Competition was intense.

.

The office couples join us for dinner and do the poster judging. The missionaries take these welcome poster VERY seriously.

.

The winners of the 9th TKM Family Olympics was Elder Barrow and Elder Greenhalgh. The poster judging was a little controversial this time, but it was enough to secure these two Elders the gold medal.

.

We love these missionaries! It has been incredible to see how much they have changed over the last year. We feel so proud of them and are grateful for the difference they’ve made in the Tennessee Knoxville Mission. Great things lie ahead for each of them!

Book of Mormon in 65 Days!

Back in April, Sister Barlow invited all missionaries in the Tennessee Knoxville Mission to increase in power by reading the Book of Mormon in 65 days. This was the number of days it took Joseph Smith to translate the Book of Mormon by the power of God. Our goal was to read it at the same pace.

.

Over the next 9 weeks, everyone worked really hard in keeping up with the schedule. Most missionaries also highlighted this new copy of the Book of Mormon with something they were looking for…things like the Doctrine of Christ, covenants, prophets, or willingness were a few examples.

.

It is difficult to put into words the powerful experience we had together as a mission. It was really meaningful to do it together, and anytime you read the Book of Mormon at a faster pace like this, it leads to observations and connections you wouldn’t make otherwise. We began each meeting during this period with two missionaries sharing thoughts about what they were learning from their recent Book of Mormon reading. We discussed their progress and learnings in interviews.

In the introduction of the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith is quoted as saying, ““I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.”

President Ezra Taft Benson once said, “There is a power in the book which will begin to flow into your lives the moment you begin a serious study of the book. You will find greater power to resist temptation. You will find the power to avoid deception. You will find the power to stay on the strait and narrow path.”

Our current prophet, President Russell M. Nelson taught, “When I think of the Book of Mormon, I think of the word power. The truths of the Book of Mormon have the power to heal, comfort, restore, succor, strengthen, console, and cheer our souls.”

We learned in the TKM the power that these prophets are talking about and invite everyone to tap into that power themselves by reading the Book of Mormon.

June 18th was the day on our schedule that we would finish the Book of Mormon. We gathered as a mission on zoom and read together the final chapter of the Book of Mormon, Moroni chapter 10. Anytime you finish the Book of Mormon, it is a meaningful experience. But finishing it together with this amazing group of representatives of Jesus Christ is an experience we will never forget.

.

Sister Barlow had promised that we would do something special to celebrate finishing the Book of Mormon together as a mission. And as promised, Sister Barlow “makes no small plans”!

“Make no small plans. They have no magic to stir men’s souls. – Spencer W. Kimball

Sister Barlow then announced that to celebrate finishing the Book of Mormon in 65 Days, we had arranged for all missionaries to be able to attend the temple. As there are no temples in our mission boundaries, this was a REALLY big deal. Many of these missionaries had not been to the temple for over a year, so some of their reactions to this announcement was priceless.

.

We are grateful for the power of the Book of Mormon. We testify that it can help everyone come closer to Jesus Christ. And we are grateful for these wonderful missionaries. We love them and feel so grateful to see them act in faith and receive the blessings that come with doing so.

Tender Mercies in the TKM: Travis

by Sister Nielson and Sister Moore

Travis was baptized into the Baptist faith when he was 12 years old. At 17 years old, when he started falling away from God, he was kicked out of church instead of welcoming him in further to give him the support he needed to make his way back. He still believed in God but that experience hardened his heart towards church. It made it difficult for him to want to return to any church, and that seemed to get more difficult as time went on.

Lisa (his wife) and Travis met right before Covid. Lisa was praying before they met and she said, “If the next person isn’t the right person, then I’m done dating all together.” That’s exactly when God put Travis in her path.

Lisa is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but hadn’t gone to church in a long time. Travis knew she was a member but they didn’t talk much about her religion because Lisa didn’t want to push a church onto Travis.

Travis and Lisa

In 2023, Lisa and Travis started talking about church and wanting Jesus Christ back in their life. Lisa left the decision of which church to attend up to Travis. Nothing really came of it because it wasn’t at the top of his priority list at the time, but God didn’t give up and continued to work on his heart.

In the span of one week, Travis had many random people on the street come up to him talking to him about church, asking to pray for him or asking him to pray for them.

That same week, Travis got in a car accident. The driver in the other vehicle was a super nice guy. He got out and asked Travis if he had a church to go to. He said no and the stranger said he didn’t either so he asked if they could pray for each other to find a church. So they prayed. The next morning, Travis woke up and said “Ok Lisa let’s go to the Mormon church.”

Through those interactions with strangers on the street, his heart began to be softened. Their first Sunday in church, he met the missionaries.  “My heart felt happy, I felt the spirit and that made me really want it more.”

The missionaries invited him to pray about getting baptized, so he did. His answer came in a way God knew he needed, a way that was unique to him. His grandpa had passed away in 2005, but growing up, he and his grandpa were really close. He would spend hours helping him on his farm, having heartfelt conversations while they were eating peaches in his truck. His grandpa means the world to him and God knew that.

The night he prayed about baptism he had a very powerful dream. In his dream, Travis’ grandpa was there and only said two words to him. “Move forward.” That was the answer Travis was looking for.

The missionaries explained faith to be an action word. Hearing that clicked for Travis and increased his desire to take action so he could further show his faith to God. He knew he needed to be baptized.

.

Being baptized was a big decision he was making, so leading up to it, he prayed that he would be able to walk into his baptism on his own two feet and he’d be out of his cast. In his previous appointment, the doctor said he’d have a cast on for three more months so the chances were looking low, but his faith was high. His follow up appointment was two days before his baptism. They were shocked by the amount of progress his leg had made and said that he could have the cast off for his baptism. It was a huge miracle how fast his leg had healed, especially since they hadn’t seen much improvement since December. After he began to pray and turn back towards God, that’s where it all turned around. God answered his prayers and he was able to walk into the waters of baptism on his own two feet.

Throughout this whole process, Lisa had been praying for guidance on what to do and how to get Travis to church. The inspiration she received was to be quiet, which was out of her nature but she trusted God. Travis also expressed if he crossed paths with the missionaries any sooner, he would have turned them away. God’s timing is beautiful and He knew exactly what Travis needed. His heart needed time and it all fell into place right when he was ready.

Travis was baptized on June 22, 2024. He now has a drive to be surrounded with people and places where the spirit is present. He is so full of light and has a deep desire to help other people. A few things he’s looking forward to is getting a calling in the church and having the priesthood.

.

Lisa has seen such a noticeable and happy change as he’s been filled immensely with the spirit. In turn, they have grown closer to each other and to God within their marriage.

There was another beautiful tender mercy. As Travis has been preparing to do baptisms in the temple, he discovered that someone had already done all of the temple work for his grandpa. The same grandpa that had been in his dream, encouraging him to “Move forward!”

Tender Mercies in the TKM: Gary

Gary put in a media referral to get to know more of Christ’s love for him! When he met with Sister Holladay and Sister Bunderson, he told them that he had met some missionaries before and that he wanted to come closer to Jesus Christ! The sisters shared the Book of Mormon with him, and invited him to read the Book of Mormon to draw closer to Christ.

He was so excited to have the missionaries back over to learn more about the church! They continued to teach him. Each time they would come over he always felt something different when they were around.

Gary wanted to come to church so badly but he had a few health problems that prevented him from coming. He also had a lot of fears and anxiety about church. He finally agreed to come to a church tour. When the church tour happened, he loved coming in and seeing a large picture of Christ hanging up on the wall right outside of the chapel. When the sacrament was explained the spirit was so strong.

A few days later we extended a baptism date for him, but he was still very anxious about it. A week later, we got a call from him saying that he had a big health scare. He told us that he prayed for it to go away and it went away. As he prayed, he said he knew that this was Christ’s church and that he wanted to be baptized. So we put him on date for baptism!

Sister Palmer, Gary, and Sister Foster

Gary came to church and loved the people and how welcomed he felt. He was also very nervous for his baptism so we invited him to come see one of our other friends’ baptism. He told us that he felt the spirit very strong there and that all of his anxiety went away. Gary was baptized on May 25, 2024.

Since his baptism, he hasn’t missed a single day off church because it is so special to him. Gary also had the opportunity to go to the temple for the first time! He loved sitting inside and told us that he felt like God was giving him strength while he was inside. He also told us that he looks foreword to going again.

Tender Mercies in the TKM: Ora and Desiree

by Ora Harris and Desiree Hoover

Ora Harris

One day I clicked on y’all’s church ad about a Bible verse and i said “Amen” to it! That small thing changed my life. Next thing you know, missionaries showed up at my door. They came in and talked to me about the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and invited me to Church.

Ora Harris, Desiree Hoover, and Sister Harrison

I came to church and liked it, especially the sacrament. I’ve never been to a church that has sacrament every week!

I continued to meet with the missionaries and learned how to make covenants with God. I changed my life by overcoming some addictions and bad habbits. I feel a lot stronger and not as weak as i use to be in my faith. The missionaries asked me to be baptized and I said yes. I had to wait for my leg to heal a little before I got baptized.

Elder Akers, Elder Bonham, Sister Stephens, Ora Harris, and Sister Harrison

I was so excited when my baptism was coming up! I got baptized and confirmed on March 24, 2024, Palm Sunday, it was very special. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made it very special for me.

Sister Stephens, Ora Harris, and Sister Harrison

Then I told my friend Miss Pat about sacrament and invited her to my baptism and she came to church for her first time on my baptism day! She loved it! She was crying! She’s never celebrated a baptism the way we do it. Then I invited my daughter Desiree to church with me and she loved it. I am staying down the path of Jesus and preparing to go to the temple, the House of The Lord.

Ora Harris and Miss Pat

Desiree Hoover

My name is Desiree Hoover. I was angry at God because I thought He took my baby girl Scarlett from me. The missionaries was meetin with momma. And I was closed off and disconnected from God. So I wasn’t interested in meetin with them.

Then one day they asked to say a prayer with me. And I did. Then they were very persistent. And I eventually started to sit in on momma’s lessons. Then I started takin momma to church. And started goin to church for myself. And continued lessons with the missionaries.

Then i decided I wanted to get baptized! But I had to wait for momma to get out of the hospital because she had a fall. I wanted her there and Miss Pat. I got baptized and confirmed with the Holy Ghost on June 15, 2024. Momma and Miss Pat both got to come to my baptism!! It was very special!

Sister Condie and Sister Wall helping Desiree in the font.

I love sunflowers and Sister Condie & Sister Wall bought me sunflowers and paydays. Because when I was pregnant with Scarlett I loved paydays! They made it very special and I will never forget it. I am now preparing to go to the temple with my momma.

Tender Mercies in the TKM: Michael

The missionaries first contact with Michael Morton was on July 16, 2023. They were going to meet with another friend and ran into Michael and his friend. Michael noticed right away that there was something different about the missionaries.

Soon Sister Harrison and Sister Lund started teaching him and helping him grow his faith in Jesus Christ. At first Michael didn’t see the need for baptism. He felt that he already had a good enough connection with God. The sisters had many lessons with him and even watched General Conference with him, but ultimately the sisters had to stop teaching him because he was so busy.

Sister Harrison, Sister Lund, and Michael

Sister Lund and Sister Biasi then ran into him again and Michael said that he was ready to get serious about learning about the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. They started to teach him pretty consistently, but the lessons were never very productive so they stopped teaching him again because He wasn’t progressing. Even though the sisters stopped teaching Michael, the Spirit continued to work in his life.

Michael kept randomly running into the missionaries around town. Finally one Sunday during church, Michael called Sister Adams and Sister Foster and said he was outside! We asked him what inspired him to come to church with us that Sunday, and he told us he wanted to get baptized.

.

We immediately started teaching Michael about baptism and began to prepare him to be baptized. Michael was so busy that sometimes we would show up to Walmart where he worked to have lessons with him.

On April 30, 2024 we taught Michael the doctrine of baptism and extended a baptismal date to him, He was very excited and willing to do whatever it would take to make this covenant with Heavenly Father. Michael was baptized on May 11, 2024 and there were many people there to support him!! He said that after his baptism he felt good and tired because he was finally clean. He said that he was able to be kinder to others and get along better with everyone. Michael is now preparing to receive the priesthood and attend the temple.

Youth Camps with the Missionaries

In June, we had the opportunity to attend multiple Stake Youth Camps with our missionaries. First up was Young Women’s Camp in the Kingsport Stake. We were so grateful to go with Sister Condie and Sister Wall who serve in the Abingdon Ward. The camp was help just outside of Abingdon in the beautiful mountains of Virgina.

Sister Wall shared a great message about charity and learning to love others like the Savior does, and Sister Condie’s message was about repentance and not expecting ourselves to be perfect. These two sisters are amazing and we are so grateful to serve with them. Plus they brought W.W.J.D. bracelets and stickers for the young women. Hopefully many of these young women will choose to serve missions, because sisters are the best!

.

Next up was Young Men’s Camp in the Chattanooga Stake. This was at a beautiful camp east of Athens, TN. We had a dozen missionaries with us there who put on a great devotional for the young men that included a Q&A on missionary work and role plays with the young men on sharing the Book of Mormon. Also included was a roping lesson from Elder Elegante. He told me I would need more practice. Added bonus: really great barbecue and dutch oven desserts!

.

We also attended Young Men’s Camp with the Kingsport Stake. This was at New River State Park in Laurel Springs, NC. Incredibly beautiful drive! I met Elder Rumsey and Elder Naufahu in Bristol and drove with them to the camp. We had missionaries share their experiences about choosing to serve a mission, and did an Q&A where young men asked many great questions about what it is like serving a mission. Because the young men hadn’t eaten yet, we scratched the activity we had planned and had dinner with the young men.

.

Also, before heading out to the YW Camp in Abingdon, we met the Bristol District for lunch at the Burger Bar in Bristol, TN. This little restaurant is famous (among the missionaries) for their Mormon Burger! And of course we had to try it. The owner came out and told us the history of the Mormon Burger. He said when he first opened the restaurant, two elders came and offered to give service to help him get the restaurant opened. They painted the walls and stools and did other jobs around the place, and he grew to love these missionaries. Once the restaurant opened, the missionaries and would come in and request their own custom burger: basically a grilled cheese sandwich with a burger. After a while, the owner put in on the menu, and it is still there today. Stop by the Burger Bar if you are ever in Bristol, TN!

Tender Mercies in the TKM: Armahni

by Sister Ihrig

It all started in July 2022 when Armahni’s step-dad, Chase, sent in a media request to learn about the power of prayer. Two zealous missionaries ventured through the trenches and hills of the North Georgia city in which Armahni and her family had recently moved. Chase, having purposefully sent in a request to meet with missionaries, answered the door, leading to a two-year long journey of faith for him and his family.

Armahni was only six years old when the missionaries started coming over, but she looked forward to their visits every time. Although she didn’t understand a lot of the discussions at first, she knew she loved God, Jesus Christ, and whatever sweet spirit the missionaries brought into their home; it was her heart’s greatest desire to connect with God.

As she grew older, she started attending church with her step-father and listening intently to the testimonies people bore about their own faith in Christ. “I loved hearing other people say what they loved about God and Jesus because I love them too!” she says. Armahni, although young, felt as though she was already a member of our church. In fact, it wasn’t until the spring of 2024 that she even knew she wasn’t.

Over seventeen missionaries had taught Armahni and her family, but only now was she old enough to be baptized, so when she was asked if that was something she wanted, she jumped on the opportunity. Finally, she could make her own covenants, or promises, with God!

Sister Ihrig, Armahni, and Sister Bailey

Before her baptism, Armahni was anything but nervous. This was something she’d looked forward to for almost the past two years! Beaming with excitement and with a twinkle in her eye, Armahni was baptized on March 30, 2024. She recounted the experience “I felt like a totally new person after I came out of the water! I could feel God’s spirit and it was really peaceful!” She later stated that she felt the same peace during and after receiving the Holy Ghost.

Once all the excitement of the event was passed, Armahni was asked why she decided to be baptized, to which she responded, “Because I love Jesus, and I was thinking I want to be a missionary and help people know God too!” Armahni has also mentioned her love for the Gift of the Holy Ghost. She loves going to primary, singing in the church choir, and taking the sacrament.

Armahni expressed gratitude for the many missionaries who had continued to teach her and her family over the years, and the multitude of ward members who helped her in Primary and at home. Armahni is super excited to grow up as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and cannot wait for her opportunity to serve her very own mission!
